Everything we need to know before visiting Barranco del Infierno
If we are looking for one of the most memorable hiking experiences in Tenerife, Barranco del Infierno deserves a place on our list.
Located in Adeje, in southern Tenerife, the trail takes us into the Barranco del Infierno Special Nature Reserve, surrounded by volcanic rock walls, characteristic Canary Island vegetation and landscapes that change as we progress.

The complete trail is approximately 6.5 km round trip and takes around 3.5 hours to complete.
This is not a race. Part of the experience is taking our time, observing the landscape and enjoying the different sections of the trail.
The route starts at approximately 350 metres above sea level in the upper part of Adeje and follows an old shepherd’s trail into the ravine.
The hike is considered medium-low difficulty, although we should remember that this is a natural trail with rocky and potentially slippery sections.
What will we see?
One of the things that makes Barranco del Infierno so special is the way the scenery constantly changes.
As we enter the ravine, the volcanic rock walls rise around us, making the landscape increasingly dramatic. Along the way, we pass viewpoints, historic features connected to Adeje’s past and areas where we can discover characteristic Canarian vegetation.
The reserve includes cardón and tabaiba vegetation in the lower areas and species such as dragon trees, wild jasmine and other native plants elsewhere.
At the end of the trail, one of its most recognisable natural attractions awaits us: the Barranco del Infierno waterfall.
But the waterfall is not the only reason to visit. The journey itself is an essential part of the experience.
What should we bring?
We do not need extensive mountaineering equipment, but we do need to come prepared.
Closed, suitable walking footwear is essential. Sandals should be avoided. Comfortable hiking or sports shoes with good grip are the right choice.
We should also bring enough water for the entire hike, sun protection and clothing suitable for the day’s weather conditions.
We should also have our booking confirmation and identification with us.
The better prepared we are, the more we can focus on enjoying the reserve.
Is a helmet compulsory?
Yes. Wearing a helmet is compulsory on the trail.
We will be walking between high rock walls, where small rockfalls can occur.
We do not need to bring our own helmet. One is provided at the meeting point before starting the hike, and we must wear it correctly as instructed during the route.
