<p data-start="8036" data-end="8171">If we are looking for one of the most memorable <strong data-start="8084" data-end="8118">hiking experiences in Tenerife</strong>, Barranco del Infierno deserves a place on our list.</p>
<p data-start="8173" data-end="8408">Located in <strong data-start="8184" data-end="8215">Adeje, in southern Tenerife</strong>, the trail takes us into the Barranco del Infierno Special Nature Reserve, surrounded by volcanic rock walls, characteristic Canary Island vegetation and landscapes that change as we progress.</p>
<p data-start="8410" data-end="8493">Before putting on our hiking shoes, however, there are a few things we should know.</p>
<p data-start="8495" data-end="8589">How long does the hike take? What should we bring? Is a helmet compulsory? Do we need to book?</p>
<p data-start="8591" data-end="8666">Here is <strong data-start="8599" data-end="8665">everything we need to know before hiking Barranco del Infierno</strong>.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="1qw7air" data-start="8668" data-end="8721">How long does the Barranco del Infierno hike take?</h2>
<p data-start="8723" data-end="8824"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="7751" data-permalink="https://barrancodelinfierno.es/en/barranco-del-infierno-in-tenerife-everything-you-need-to-know-before-your-hike/l1040825-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/barrancodelinfierno.es/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/L1040825.jpg?fit=1080%2C1620&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1080,1620" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="Barranco del Infierno" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/barrancodelinfierno.es/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/L1040825.jpg?fit=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1" class="alignright wp-image-7751" src="https://i0.wp.com/barrancodelinfierno.es/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/L1040825.jpg?resize=365%2C548&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="365" height="548" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/barrancodelinfierno.es/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/L1040825.jpg?w=1080&amp;ssl=1 1080w, https://i0.wp.com/barrancodelinfierno.es/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/L1040825.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https://i0.wp.com/barrancodelinfierno.es/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/L1040825.jpg?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w, https://i0.wp.com/barrancodelinfierno.es/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/L1040825.jpg?resize=768%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/barrancodelinfierno.es/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/L1040825.jpg?resize=1024%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px" />The complete trail is approximately <strong data-start="8759" data-end="8780">6.5 km round trip</strong> and takes around <strong data-start="8798" data-end="8823">3.5 hours to complete</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="8826" data-end="8962">This is not a race. Part of the experience is taking our time, observing the landscape and enjoying the different sections of the trail.</p>
<p data-start="8964" data-end="9108">The route starts at approximately <strong data-start="8998" data-end="9028">350 metres above sea level</strong> in the upper part of Adeje and follows an old shepherd&#8217;s trail into the ravine.</p>
<p data-start="9110" data-end="9262">The hike is considered <strong data-start="9133" data-end="9158">medium-low difficulty</strong>, although we should remember that this is a natural trail with rocky and potentially slippery sections.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="1fhlpe7" data-start="9264" data-end="9284">What will we see?</h2>
<p data-start="9286" data-end="9390">One of the things that makes Barranco del Infierno so special is the way the scenery constantly changes.</p>
<p data-start="9392" data-end="9650">As we enter the ravine, the <strong data-start="9420" data-end="9458">volcanic rock walls rise around us</strong>, making the landscape increasingly dramatic. Along the way, we pass viewpoints, historic features connected to Adeje&#8217;s past and areas where we can discover characteristic Canarian vegetation.</p>
<p data-start="9652" data-end="9803">The reserve includes cardón and tabaiba vegetation in the lower areas and species such as dragon trees, wild jasmine and other native plants elsewhere.</p>
<p data-start="9805" data-end="9930">At the end of the trail, one of its most recognisable natural attractions awaits us: <strong data-start="9890" data-end="9929">the Barranco del Infierno waterfall</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="9932" data-end="10041">But the waterfall is not the only reason to visit. The journey itself is an essential part of the experience.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="tb5inv" data-start="10043" data-end="10067">What should we bring?</h2>
<p data-start="10069" data-end="10152">We do not need extensive mountaineering equipment, but we do need to come prepared.</p>
<p data-start="10154" data-end="10304"><strong data-start="10154" data-end="10205">Closed, suitable walking footwear is essential.</strong> Sandals should be avoided. Comfortable hiking or sports shoes with good grip are the right choice.</p>
<p data-start="10306" data-end="10435">We should also bring <strong data-start="10327" data-end="10363">enough water for the entire hike</strong>, sun protection and clothing suitable for the day&#8217;s weather conditions.</p>
<p data-start="10437" data-end="10513">We should also have our <strong data-start="10461" data-end="10504">booking confirmation and identification</strong> with us.</p>
<p data-start="10515" data-end="10589">The better prepared we are, the more we can focus on enjoying the reserve.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="1k6k77n" data-start="10591" data-end="10617">Is a helmet compulsory?</h2>
<p data-start="10619" data-end="10672">Yes. <strong data-start="10624" data-end="10658">Wearing a helmet is compulsory</strong> on the trail.</p>
<p data-start="10674" data-end="10750">We will be walking between high rock walls, where small rockfalls can occur.</p>
<p data-start="10752" data-end="10920">We do not need to bring our own helmet. <strong data-start="10792" data-end="10857">One is provided at the meeting point before starting the hike</strong>, and we must wear it correctly as instructed during the route.</p>
<p data-start="10922" data-end="11025">These safety measures are an important part of responsibly managing this protected natural environment.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="1xlpn2g" data-start="11027" data-end="11071">Do we need to book Barranco del Infierno?</h2>
<p data-start="11073" data-end="11119">Yes. <strong data-start="11078" data-end="11119">We need to book our visit in advance.</strong></p>
<p data-start="11121" data-end="11310">Access is limited to help balance visitor activity with the protection of this sensitive natural environment. We therefore recommend booking ahead, particularly during busy holiday periods.</p>
<p data-start="11312" data-end="11465">The process is straightforward: we visit the official Barranco del Infierno website, choose an available date and time slot and receive our confirmation.</p>
<p data-start="11467" data-end="11546">There is no need to print it; we can show the confirmation on our mobile phone.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="1i6syu6" data-start="11548" data-end="11582">Where is Barranco del Infierno?</h2>
<p data-start="11584" data-end="11672">Barranco del Infierno is located in <strong data-start="11620" data-end="11671">Adeje, southern Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="11674" data-end="11781">The trail begins at the upper end of <strong data-start="11711" data-end="11735">Calle de los Molinos</strong>, at approximately 350 metres above sea level.</p>
<p data-start="11783" data-end="11957">Its location makes it an excellent nature experience if we are staying in southern Tenerife and want to discover a completely different side of the island beyond its beaches.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="khl8lm" data-start="11959" data-end="11985">Five things to remember</h2>
<p data-start="11987" data-end="12242">Before our visit, there are five essentials to keep in mind: the hike is approximately <strong data-start="12074" data-end="12095">6.5 km round trip</strong>, takes around <strong data-start="12110" data-end="12123">3.5 hours</strong>, requires <strong data-start="12134" data-end="12162">suitable closed footwear</strong>, wearing a <strong data-start="12174" data-end="12198">helmet is compulsory</strong>, and we must <strong data-start="12212" data-end="12241">book our visit in advance</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="12244" data-end="12357">Most importantly, we are entering a <strong data-start="12280" data-end="12306">Special Nature Reserve</strong> that we should enjoy responsibly and help protect.</p>
